Perfectionism Study Information Letter for Law Schools

September 5, 2024

Dear NALP Member:

As the legal profession continues to increase its focus on the critical topics of mental health and well-being, ongoing empirical exploration of lawyer well-being is essential to better understand our challenges and more effectively solve them. In that spirit, we are pleased to announce an important new research project from Krill Strategies, JC Coaching & Consulting, and Ambitionprofile that is being conducted in collaboration with NALP.

Utilizing an anonymous survey that will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, the study will generate valuable data on a range of risk factors related to mental health and well-being problems among lawyers, with a specific focus on the relationship between mental health, substance use, and the perfectionistic tendencies that are common within the legal profession. This novel research will serve numerous educational purposes for the legal profession and will support future interventions designed to improve mental health and well-being.

We hope that your law school will be willing to participate and support this research by distributing the survey link to your alumni. There is no cost to participate in the research project. Law schools that choose to participate will not be identified in any manner, and no identifying information (such as IP addresses or email addresses) will be collected from any individual survey participants.

To participate, your law school would simply need to disseminate this secure link to the online survey to your alumni along with the brief description of the research project. Please note that only lawyers who are currently practicing at a law firm are eligible to complete the survey.

In lieu of emailing the secure link directly to their alumni, law schools may also choose to include the link and information about the survey in any regularly scheduled newsletters or well-being related communications that might otherwise be distributed to this population. Additionally, if your law schools maintains a separate intranet page or other online hub for alumni resources, placement of the survey link and research project information on that page for a specified period would also be an appropriate way to facilitate participation.

Survey responses must be submitted by October 4, 2024, to be included in the study.

All survey responses will be entirely anonymous, and IP addresses will not be stored or collected. The aggregate survey data will be shared via a published article and webinar once the study is completed.

More information about this study, including a PDF sample survey, can be found at https://www.nalp.org/2024_lawyer_perfectionism.
